I can't say, but we are going to look at a flat in Bristol tomorrow.  I went through the city council's website and, knowing the address, was able to look up the council tax band for the property as a whole.  I'm not sure how many flats are there, so I don't know the exact rate we'd pay.  But it's worth a shot for your city.  If you know the address.

How much you'll pay is completely dependent on the rates set by your council.  A flat for £400/month in London might have a higher council tax rate than a £400/month flat in Grimsby -- the rent doesn't come into play at all as your council tax will depend on the band in which your property falls.  They might both be Band A, but A might be £1200/year in London and £900/year in Grimsby (totally made those figures up, btw).

Long ago when bored & curious, I found a link that allowed you to plug in your postcode/address and it told you what band your property was in.  Anyone know where this is??
BUNAC: 9/2004 - 12/2004. Student visa: 1/2005 - 7/2005. Student visa #2: 9/2006 - 1/2008. FLR(IGS): 1/2008 - 10/2008. FLR(M): 10/2008 - 10/2010. ILR 10/2010!!

Here is the link:
http://www.voa.gov.uk/council_tax/cti_home.htm

Then you'll need to go to your council's website to find the council tax charges for each band.

For the 25% single-person discount, you need to request the appropriate form from the council and make the application as soon as you move in.      If you don't get it sent in straight away, the council will probably try to claim that you will have to pay the full amount from the time you moved in to the time the application was received.

Oh, and welcome to UK-Y.  :)

When we were looking for a place to live, I would just call the council house here in Birmingham and talk to them about what band each address was in and how much that tax would be for that band.  They were always very nice and patient with me and believe me, we looked at many places before deciding!
