Camp site recommendations?

We've been here a month and the box with our tent in it just arrived.  We live in the southwest of England, but don't mind travelling a bit. Does anyone know of good campsites. I'm especially interested in ones in a more woodsy locale. Seems like the ones I've looked up online are just in a big open meadow.

For a woodsy locale try the New Forest.  Loads of campsites there operated by the foresty commission.

It's a great location as well as having the forest, there is the beach not too far away in Bournemouth, city shopping in southampton, and general countryside in Hampshire and Dorset.

I also love camping but haven't had a chance to do it yet in the UK, especially since we dont have a car.  Does anyone know of a list of campsites that are accessible by train or close to other public transportation?

on radio 4 the other week they had a whole section on camping.  near the end of the program each panalist talked about which camp site they like the best.  one in particular sounded lovely.  of course i can't remember if but here's the link to the show.  you can listen again:

If camping in the new forest there are buses that run periodically and a train that stops at Lyndhurst road for one of the campsites.

Yes, please do.  I'd love to go camping some when I get to the UK.  Last time I lived there, I always said we were going to, but never did!  Better resolved this time around .

The National Trust have some lovely sites in the Lake District; quite a long drive for you but it might be worth considering if you're going for more than a weekend:

If you want to save money and need only the basics, try looking for "CL" sites (Certified Location).   These are generally very small campsites, with basic water supply, dumping points, and sometimes electrical hookups, but without the clubhouses, swimming pools, shops, and other fancier facilities of the large sites.  They are generally limited to just a few caravans (travel trailers) or tents at a time.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice. I lugged my camping gear from the US a year ago, and we STILL have not been camping.  Although my wife is currently in Holland camping.
