Webcam sound problems
« on: September 17, 2006, 07:42:23 PM »
Hi,
My dad bought a Logitech Quickcam Fusion camera.  I can contact him through MSN messenger and see him through his webcam.  I can't get any sound.  The camera has a built in microphone and he has also tried speaking into an external microphone.

I've asked him to go through the Audio and Video Setup one more time to ensure there's no problems.  Has anyone come across such a problem where just the sound doesn't work and if there were any things to try to overcome the problem?

Thanks,
Matt

Because I have the same problem, but haven't fixed it... I'll make some guesses.  My vocab isn't really up to the task, either.

Your dad's sound jack inputs (?) might be dirty, or the wires behind them might be loose.  The headset jacks themselves may not fit properly... can you ask him to wiggle the input thingies and see if you get any sound?  If he can get any sound going with a wiggle, it's a connection problem.

I had the same webcam and couldn't use it either. I could record my voice on it when the webcam wasn't being used on instant messaging but I couldn't use it at all when it was.
I gave up and just bought a microphone

I had the same problem, I finally found a setting on my computer that had the microphone muted.. somewhere deep in the depths of the computer...

He had an external microphone which he tried to plug into the microphone socket.  Also, he did find it muted at one point but I thought he fixed that.  I'll ask him to check the connections and wiggle it and maybe we'll have some success.  It's really annoying that the connection is made, we can see him but not hear anything.

Thanks,
Matt

I'd check the microphone connections by monitoring on your system's own speakers first.   Is this a Windows system?  If so, then double-click on the little speaker icon on the right-hand side of the task bar to bring up the audio control panel.  Then check that the "Mic" level is set above zero and that the appropriate "mute" box isn't checked.   You should then be able to hear yourself through the speakers and wiggle the plugs etc. to check for bad connections.

While in the audio control panel, go to the options menu and select recording controls and make sure that the mic level is not turned right down or muted.  Depending upon the webcam software, it might be looking at those record settings for the outgoing audio.
