Quick Visa Question
« on: February 13, 2006, 06:45:00 AM »
I'm in the midst of this overseas student visa hoopla and I'm wondering: how many months before the actual start of my term date can I enter the country and work part-time?

Because, I'm hoping that if all things work out by Spring, I'll be able to be over there a few months in advance well before I start school so I can start making some money. :|

Anyone know the answer?

You can enter 3 months prior to the start of term and stay 3 months after the end of your degree.

You can also work full time when school is not in session.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Really? I was always under the impression that a student visa contains entry clearance that's only granted for two weeks prior to the beginning of the start of courses, and you cannot travel to the UK to work until two weeks before everything begins. Where did you hear three months? According to the British Council website:

Can I use my entry clearance to travel before my course begins?

Your entry clearance sticker will have a "start date" which will generally be two weeks before the beginning of your course. This two-week time period is meant to give you time to settle in. You will not be able to ask for a start date earlier than this, and you will not be permitted to enter the UK under your entry clearance prior to this start date.

The real answer is that it's up to the ECO.  If you have a good reason to be in the UK before your course starts, you can REQUEST a date more than 2 wks beforehand.  Going for a little over 3 wks myself, I actually sent them an e-mail.  Here are the 2 replies:

"The two week period that you are inquiring about is a general rule that entry clearance officers go by.  If you have a special case that you think might warrant more than two weeks, you should make this clear in your entry clearance application, or if you are applying in person, make this known to the entry clearance officer.  However, it is up to the discretion of the officer as to whether or not your request will be granted." (British Council)

"You may enter up to a month before your studies begin.
When you send in your application please enclose a cover letter stating your plans." (Chicago consulate)

I've heard of people getting quite a bit of time before their course starts - to visit family, to travel, all different reasons.  They evaluate everything on a case-by-case basis.  However, since you're NOT entering the UK primarily to work, it's very risky asking for much time beforehand in order to solely work - seems like something they would frown upon.  The two weeks (I asked for 3+) are meant to give you time to find housing and a job, not to build up savings before school starts - that's your responsibility before you ever go over.

My student visa is valid exactly one month  before my course starts...My course ends in June, but I'm allowed to stay until 31st January 2008.

I didn't send a letter or anything asking if I could arrive early/stay later.  They just let me which I was thankful for, haha.
