DO I get a tax break
« on: June 29, 2006, 02:19:57 AM »
DO I get any tax breaks while working in uk under a work permit and work visa? My Boyfriend said that he thinks I get some sort of tax break for the first 5 years here.  I have seen no evidence of this anyone know?

I think it is only if you are typically not residing in the UK and it is good for two years.  Guya has posted a lot of information on it in this forum about what can be excluded from UK taxation.  If you plan on residing in the UK for greater 2 years, I think you run into problems.  But again guya is the expert.

The breaks you are referring to are based on the status of your residence.  Here, you can be Ordinarily Resident, Non-Resident, or "Resident But Not Ordinarily Resident" (RNOR).  The thing your boyfriend is thinking of is the RNOR status.

To be RNOR, you have to be here for a limited period of time.  There must be proof that your time is limited.  And there's a host of other requirements.

If your boss sent you here, then you should check with your boss to see if they're handling your tax preparation - if they are, chances are they've done everything to ensure RNOR status, since a lower tax for you reduces their financial commitment to you (they pay you less, but you get the same after-tax take home pay).  Everybody wins.

If they aren't arranging your tax preparation, then you should get some expert advice to determine your residency status.

There are many tax breaks in many places.  5 years applies - for instance - in Japan.

The UK is much more enlightened so one can remain non-UK domicilec without time-limits.  What advice have you sought so far and what have you done to minimise UK taxes?

Elizabeth - Ignoring the work permit's limitations, how long do you think you will be in the UK?  It is your intentions (not those of your employer) that are key in deciding what UK tax breaks you can get. ;)
