Egg whites
« on: October 01, 2006, 12:38:37 PM »
Does anyone know where to find egg whites?  The only thing I've found (through a search on here) is Supercook's Egg White powder, but I'd really like to stick to the real stuff.  Something like Egg Beaters, which is made from real eggs & frozen fresh.  Dehydrated doesn't exactly sound natural or pleasant.  I'm just a poor student, cooking for herself, so just chucking out the yokes isn't exactly an economical solution (usually I like to just supplement my whole scrambled egg with a little extra white for volume).

i really dont think we have anything like EggBeaters here.   I know you say that chucking out the yolks isnt an economical solution, but surely it's no more expensive than buying some extra product?

Hmm.  I guess it's because the Egg Beaters lasts longer and doesn't make me feel wasteful by throwing out perfectly good egg yolks.

However, since eggs are generally cheaper in the UK, you might be right (I was still thinking US prices, probably).

Seems like they'd be around for the health-conscious, but there's also definitely a smaller proportion of "diet"-type foods here, I think.  Not complaining, just an observation of culture.

You can freeze the yolks for future purposes (baking, sauces, etc.) Or do you have a friend with a cat? I sometimes give extra yolks to our cats - makes their coats shiny and they think it's a yummy treat.  :)

you're right... it is a terrible waste.
i dont know what else to suggest.    Why not eat the entire egg?  Surely there is some nutritional value in the yolk?

You can buy cheap battery eggs here so chucking out the yolk isn't so bad.

That or both the cat or perhaps another student might use them?

Even in the US Egg Beaters actually work out more expensive than just buying the whole egg.

If it's health you are worried about you might want to just purchase grain fed eggs as the cholosterol/fat levels are lower.

I'm lucky as my FIL is an egg eating machine so we just chuck any extra yolks in an omelet for him.

Thanks all.  I'm not a health-Nazi or anything, but I'd rather fluff out my scrambled eggs with a little extra white than a whole other egg.  It was just a bit of an idle fancy anyway, nothing too major.  I do like to buy free range/organic eggs, hence the search for a cheaper alternative to just wasting eggs for the white.  Guess I'll just do without!  Ta.

We do the same....

I just started using more yolks than in the US to be honest..

maybe find some body building guru that likes raw eggs in his/her smoothie shakes? :)

I'lll gladly rent out my FIL too!

I would definitely buy Egg Beaters if they were available here.  DH hates the idea of eating the yolks of eggs and also doesn't like the taste.  He'd prefer an egg substitute any day over regular eggs.  I also don't feel right just throwing out the yolks.  Even knowing the costs, I still just feel like I'm wasting food!

I've never tried it but I've heard egg yolks make a good face pack and I think you can use them as a hair conditioner too.
