21 Day Wait for Rabies Titre?
« on: October 01, 2006, 08:31:39 PM »
I read somewhere that the lab that does the rabies tests recommends 21 days between the vaccination and the blood draw.  Does anybody have any info on this, and has anybody tried doing it sooner, or is that even allowed?

I'm getting nervous, because we're cutting it close on our departure date.  We don't have a very specific deadline, but I'm worried about leaving before it gets so hot here that animals aren't allowed to fly.

I would ask your vet.  Our vet said we could do it sooner if we wanted.  21 days is what is optimal for antibody response.  We almost did ours earlier, as her last vaccination was a few months previous (before we knew we were moving!).  Therefore, it was likely she already had a sufficient titre when the second shot was given (her titer was 10x what was required!)

Do keep in mind though that it can take a month or two to get your titre results back.  So, if you do the blood draw early, and the titer isn't high enough it's possible that you may have to redo the test which will end up costing you time and money!

According to the DEFRA info. it does recommend 21 days.  However, I had the blood drawn within a few days and everything came back fine.  I did it because my 6 month window was extremely tight and I had to coincide it with the end of my lease, etc.  I'd say if you can spare the extra 3 weeks then you should do it.
