A challenge..
« on: December 04, 2006, 05:04:33 PM »
I'm trying to find a book for DH for  Christmas.  I always get him one and more times than not, I fail at finding a book that he enjoys because our reading tastes are so different.

So, I was wondering if you voracious readers out there had any ideas.

He is a reader.  He reads a big variety of stuff but he's a slow reader - taking the same amount of time to read light stuff as he does heavy stuff.

He loves mysteries, loved the DaVinci code.  He also really liked The dog in the nighttime - he read it in a few days.

He's really enjoyed Len Deighton and Robert Ludlum.  But he also really likes Thomas Hardy.

I am so not into mysteries or that genre at all so I'm stymied.  Any ideas would be great!

How about the Erast Fandorin series by Boris Akunin?

The above is the first in the series, but I think there about 5 or 6 books translated now.

They're about a 19th century Russian detective and are funny and well-written. And Fandorin is a very human protagonist. Good books!

Chary, are you sure you don't know my husband?

that sounds perfect.  Batman-like and corny dialogue - that seems to suit.  Kind of a mix between mystery and corny B-movies.  Two of his favourite things.

Well ...we've been meaning to tell you ...  ;)

Actually, the review that described the books as Batman-like, I thought, was way off. They're funny, but not really like that at all. Still, they're good and I hope he'll like them!
