Physical before I move?
« on: December 10, 2006, 11:40:29 PM »
I'm moving to London in January to be with my husband.  Obviously everything is in a whirlwind trying to sort things out and get everything finished and taken care of.  I THOUGHT I had a beautifully precise to do list.
But now, my (US) boss has said that I am required (by the UK) to have a complete physical before I will be allowed to move.  I have not found any reference to that anywhere and my boss is known for talking like she knows all the answers to the universe when she clearly has no clue.  But, as is always the case, it was enough to send me into a mini-panic.
Is she right?  Is there some point where I might need to prove a recent complete physical?  TB tests are no longer required, so a physical wouldn't be either right?  I know I'm being paranoid but I just thought I'd whip out the "ask-the-audience" lifeline :)
And I'm thinkin' if you were mine,
I'd never let you go,
And that would be just beautiful I know
Beautiful to take a chance,
And if you fall, you fall
And I'm thinkin'
I wouldn't mind at all . . . (Billie Holiday)

Sounds like your boss is a bit mixed up.  The US requires a medical visit/x-rays from immigrants entering the country - we have a UK-citizen friend who's immigrating to the US as spouse and he's just received a date for his test - but you certainly won't be required to do the same as a US citizen entering the UK as a spouse. :)

From certain countries, you might be required to take a physical prior to entry to the UK.  I haven't have heard of them doing that for folks from the US though.
WARNING My thoughts and comments are entirely my own.  Especially when it comes to immigration and tax advice, I am not a professional.  My advice is to seek out professional advice.  Your mileage may vary!

No, but some employers do require physicals, especially big multi-nationals. I'd check with the UK employer.

When I moved over I had to see the airport medical office before I was stamped in... they just waved me through once they found out I was a USC.

Waves of relief.  One less thing to schedule.  Thanks so much!
