The area around Earls Court
« on: November 26, 2006, 07:54:50 PM »
DH and I are coming up for a weekend in May for a concert and to celebrate my birthday.  The concert is at Earls Court.
What is the area like?  Are there some nice places to stay at?  Or would it be better to stay in another area of London?

Earls Court is busy, noisy, brash and can be fun.  Excellent cheap restaurants in the area, but FULL of the backpacker-student types.  Cheap hotels, but most definitely lacking in extras (phones in the room) and the beds may have pretty lousy mattresses, etc.  I'm sure there are some nice hotels in the area as well, but I've always traveled on the cheap and you most definitely get what you pay for in the Earls Court area.
If you don't know where you're going, it doesn't matter what road you take.

A lot of the less expensive hotels do no have lifts either.  Which can be a pain if you've been lugging a 70lb suitcase up and down the london underground...been there.

That aside, I LOVED the Earls Court area.  It's very funky, has great neighborhoods to stroll around and like IdahoSwede said has some excellent inexpensive restaurants.

I hope you have a fantastic time.

There are also heaps of very swanky hotels nearby...Kensington is full of them.  I would have thought that you could get whatever was in your proce range, there is such a mix.

I second that there are great places to eat and nice pubs around too.

Thanks all...the last time we were in London (for the David Gilmour concert) we stayed at the Radisson Edwardian Vanderbilt in Kensington.  I'll check to see how far away that is from Earls Court.
We will only be staying at the most two nights, so we won't have much luggage.  Probably just two backpacks.
I know it's silly but I don't feel that comfortable walking in London at night or taking the tube.  During the day I'm alright, but at night I get a bit scared.  Even with DH by my side.
