but I can say that despite it's bad reputation, it did do a lot of good with US government agencies and cleaning up and streamlining their processes.

it does make for interesting reading!

My personal solution was to get an account from http://www.remotecontrolmail.com/.  I changed all my US stuff to that address and I have to say it was super easy.  I get to see all my postal mail online and get any sort of stuff forwarded to me if I need to.  Family always used to sort of collect everything, including the junk, and just send me a huge useless and expensive package every month.  Not effective.

Now, of course I don't actually live there, but it would be similar to a PO Box.  You can even get UPS and FedEx stuff sent there.  When it arrives you can have it scanned or if you need it forwarded, they will mail it off to you, anywhere in the world.  It is so rarely that I need anything physically, that most of it just ends up being recycled.
WARNING My thoughts and comments are entirely my own.  Especially when it comes to immigration and tax advice, I am not a professional.  My advice is to seek out professional advice.  Your mileage may vary!

Most credit cards in this country can be held by someone living outside the UK.  We generally had no problem with mailing people's statements abroad, mailing their actual plastic abroad was of more concern - for this purpose, we didn't mind if people gave their parent's address in the UK, for example, and had them forward/take care of the mail.
