GP Surgery Dispensery
« on: November 30, 2006, 12:17:14 PM »
ok so i feel stupid asking this question.  i've been here 3 years.  i should know how all this works but i don't.  so every month i pick up the RX at my GP dispensery.  i take the rx to a pharmacy (or post to boots.com).

my boyfriend went to the dr for the first time in 5 years yesterday and was percribed ear drops.  the dr told him to take the rx to the dispensery and they woudl give him the drops.

my question is this- can i get all of my rx filled this way?  this would be great- one less trip to the pharmacy!

We pick up our prescriptions at the GP surgery.  I think the rule is that if you live more than a mile from a chemist you can have them filled at the surgery.
Our surgery is a branch -the GP's bring the prescriptions over from the dispensary(the main surgery is about 5 miles away). They keep the most popular items (antibiotics and such) at the branch so that you get your prescription as you are leaving from seeing the GP.  For repeat Rx's it takes 2 working days.
It works out well.  Yesterday I had to take our oldest to see the GP.  She needed antibiotics and I was able to go home with them without having to drive to the chemist.

I know nothing of any rule about living a mile from a chemist.  I do know some doctor's surgeries keep stocks of their own medicines - usually stuff that might be needed on an emergency prescription, or difficult to get stuff - but it is pretty unusual.

That's the deal down here in deepest, darkest Cornwall. We've qualified to have our scripts filled at the doc's in both places we've lived, (different surgeries).

I don't think our surgery here in deepest darkest Pembrokeshire keeps anything on hand. But the chemist is just across the road from the surgery, so it's not an issue. One stop shopping!  :)

Same here, in deepest darkest West Lothian... the chemist is right next door to the surgery, so they dont keep any medicines for dispensing at the surgery at all.
