When you find US food in the UK...
« on: December 03, 2006, 12:53:40 PM »
I've been thinking that when I find US food here in the UK I sometimes buy it even though if I were living in the US I wouldn't think twice about wanting it.

Like yesterday I found Oreos.  At home I couldn't give a flip about having them or not, but seing them in the shop I had an overwhelming desire for Milk and Oreos.

I guess maybe it is just because the remind me of home, or are something old and familiar.

Does anyone else experience this?

Ha, this is the exact same reason that when I first moved to the UK in 2005 I used to eat at Burger King all the time.  Back in the States, I won't touch BK with a ten-foot pole, but like you said, it was familiar and that was oddly comforting.

This is why I've been eating Skippy peanut butter sandwiches all week. My peanut butter in the States used to go bad because I wouldn't eat it fast enough. I'm also anticipating a trip to Pizza Hut soon, when at home I never ate at Pizza Hut. It's a weird thing.

I absolutely do this, and was just talking about this to another American expat friend today!

I'm down in London at the moment visiting and she and another expat friend took me to the food hall at Selfridges, where I spent too much money on Jelly Bellies and chocolate and Crisco - though I managed to pass up buying things just for the sake of having American food in the house!  This time, anyway.  Back in Middlesbrough, over the past two months I've bought Oreos, Ritz crackers, and several other American things that I subsequently haven't touched, just because they were familiar brands and having them in my cabinets to look at makes me feel less homesick. :P

And don't even get me started on Pizza Hut.  I'm a Papa John's girl, and yet I think I've eaten there four times in eight weeks, when I'm pretty sure I haven't eaten Pizza Hut in the States more than four times in two years. :P

I do the opposite. I wasn't really bothered when I lived in the UK. (except for my pb m&m's addiction) Now that I'm in the US, I buy UK food. I found HP sauce and got 5 bottles of it. I

'm having serious cravings for WKD blue, but I can't find it anywhere here. (I even contacted the people who make it to see where I can buy it in the USA  :-[ ) I found quavers and areos in Atlanta and have a nice stash of them now.

I have found it both ways...I just spent the last six months in the UK and can't tell you how excited I was the one night my boyfriend took me to a Pizza Hut..I was so excited to be going there for dinner..and when I am in the States I never eat there...
But I just recently came back to the states and I am missing England..so this past week when I was on vacation in DisneyWorld I went into the UK in Epcot and scoured the shops there for English candy...I bought 2 Galaxy Bars, 2 Aero Bars..I would have bought more but Disney is so expensive I couldn't afford it...lol I even managed to have fish and chips for dinner that night...
