can we claim moving expenses on US income tax forms?
« on: December 22, 2006, 10:42:41 AM »
i moved to the UK in may & have a veritable buttload of receipts from all of the shipping of my stuff. can i claim that?

what about medical expenses? over the past three years, i've spent more than $20,000 (in the US) on TMJ treatment. can i claim all of that, if i've claimed none in the past, or just what i spent in 2006?

it's not where you're born, it's where you belong

As far as the first one, it depends on how long you had resided at your previous residence.  There is also a distance calculation, but obviously you have met that.  Information can be found here http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc455.html (and this is obviously not applicable for your UK taxes).

As far as the medical, I think, though I am not sure, you would have to file amended tax returns for the years you did not claim the medical expenses.  Also, if any of the money came out of your Health Spending Account that was already pre-tax money, you cannot claim it as a deduction.

I agree with Kitsonk.

1)  You can deduct your moving expenses provided the move was work related for at least one of you (I'm assuming you're married here).  Read up on the rules, there's a minimum number of weeks one of you must work full-time in order to meet the requirements.

2)  You can deduct the medical expenses only in hte year you paid for them.  If your health insurance plan paid for part of the cost, you can only deduct the portion you paid for.  Medical expenses are not deductable in the UK.
