mailing his passport and important docs from UK?!

I was reading wishstar's experiance with this process and it was noted to send documents from the UK to me in the US by regular mail.
How can this be safe?!
Surely there is some reliable recored delivery service??

Please, friends, tell me of your experiances with mailing such precious documents.

When we went thru this, he sent his documents to me by fedex :)  We had no problem, and they do have a reliable tracking system.

Yeah, don't get hooked up on my ignorance.  :)  Apparently there are ways to get UPS and Fedex to do these things rather trouble free....we just didn't know they existed back then!

I had to send a cheque to my mother overnight and UPS did it - collected it at my home in England by 3.30 pm and it was in her hands in Florida by 11.00 am the next morning!  It wasn't cheap - but it was reliable.

We used recorded delivery from the Royal Mail.  I don't recommend it, obviously.  In fact, stay away from the Royal Mail altogether.  They're crap.  :)

Thing is, because both countries have different tracking systems, you cannot really use recorded delivery from US to UK. Obviously some Post Office employees do not realise this! We used it once (UK to US) and they lost it. They tracked it to landing at JFK then said after that it is in the hands of the US Postal service and they could not do anything, because a UK tracking # means nothing to the US Mail & vice versa. Use FedEx or UPS!

Ditto going from the USA to UK.  Once it's out of country it's out of site!

You'd think they'd learn from the private sector and make stuff trackable.

UPS is unable to track international deliveries? ???......their adverts over here in the States claim they do. The U.S Postal Service will only track up to the point of departure and then they cop out, deferring to British Customs and the Royal Mail.

UPS can but like you said the USPS (US Postal Service) and Royal Mail don't.

i didn't trust the Royal Mail, so we used FEDEX, which turned out to be a total nightmare because the package wasn't delivered when promised....i'd stick with UPS or the Royal Mail...i'll never use FEDEX again!

We had a great experience with Fedex.  He posted his documents from London at 5pm and they arrives in my hands in Florida at 10:30 the next morning.  We were able to go online and track its exact movements the entire way.  It only cost him 25 pounds.

I was nervous about sending our passports, birthcerts, bank details and other important original documents by USPS, even their express certified mail, so I sprung the $30 to Fedex it all up to New York.  Dropped it off at 4:50 last night and according to their online tracking system it arrived and was signed for at the consulate at 9am this morning.
