First time knowing about tax paying
« on: January 04, 2007, 07:13:20 PM »
I think I kinda knew that I still had to pay taxes since I am an American citizen living in the UK, but I'm still shady about certain things:

I think the last time and first time I paid taxes in the US was in 2004 (could be 2005) - I then came over to the UK during the middle of 2005 and have been taking up residence with my british husband since then. I have no assets in the US to my name, except a bank account that I keep open (it doesn't collect interest or anything - free checking). I've not been added to my husband's bank account just yet either.

So, do I have to pay taxes still? I'm not working here in the UK.... My mother had said she didn't think I had to file anything since I don't own anything except the bank account in the US....

If I do have to still file taxes, can someone point me in the direction of where the proper forms are for my situation, preferably a website that isn't too confusing :P

I'd suggest you read all of the items in the menu you can click on down the left hand side of this webpage:

Not unless your British husband gave you $100,000 or you had more than $10,000 in UK bank accounts

I know this is kind of off topic but Dh and I are saving up to move back to the states in a few years.  Is this going to throw us off a bit? We plan on having about two times to three times this much before we move.  Is it better to take my name off of our savings account?  This could actually affect our decision on what to do with our move.

You need to take inheritance and gift taxes into account when deciding to put everything in one person's name.  That is a topic that is too vast for a simple site like this.  You would want to take some counseling from a dual-qualified expert to ensure you are not "robbing Peter to pay Paul".

Form TD F 90-22.1 is an easy form to fill out.  Don't fret if your bank balance exceeds $10,000; just file the form.  It is an information-only form.  There is no tax to pay on this form.
