« on: September 03, 2006, 10:10:47 AM »
Hi all

I am trying to get an answer from Sky poeple about having My NTSC tv working with Sky+.

Can you please check your Video output and tell me if you have PAL/SECAM/NTSC output on Sky+ Box ?

Also if you have HD option can you please check the output of it ?

Thanks

There is nothing in the setup options on the Sky+ box to change between PAL, SECAM or NTSC. Not sure if I am looking in the right place but hope that helps.

I've never seen an actual Sky/Sky+ box which offers NTSC conversion.

If this is coupling up to the same plasma TV which you managed to get working with direct video (RGB) from other U.K. 625-line sources though, you should be able to do the same with the Sky box by using a SCART-to-RCA adapter lead.

I di not get my TV workinng with direct video (RGB) , but it works with HOTBIRD Free TV stuff using my US box (NTSC/PAL/MILTU Video output)
So you think that  Sky Box using SCART-to-RCA will with TV ?

Does direct video (RGB) output PALor NTSC ?

Thanks Paul

It's neither NTSC nor PAL as such.    RGB uses individual connections for the red, green, and blue video signals, bypassing the entire color-encoding process.

You just need to make sure that the TV will work on the different scanning rates (625/50 U.K.,  525/60 U.S.).

Is this the same Panasonic TH-42PX50U as we discussed before?   I just checked back on the original thread where I looked up the specifications and, unfortunately, that model doesn't have RGB inputs anyway.

I do have RGB input on the back of the Telly.  and I also have so called HMDI connection too.
I jus check the manual nor and my TV.
I just call panasonic in UK and I did ask aout SKY and my TV and I was told that it will work fine.
I am not sure if he is telling the TRUE!

I'm not familiar with the model but the specifications on the Panasonic website state that no provision is made for direct RGB inputs.

Panasonic TH-42PX50U Specifications

According to that you should have two composite inputs, two S-video inputs, and two sets of component (Y/Pr/Pb) inputs (each of which will probably be comprised of three separate RCA sockets).

It's just possible that you have a later version which does incorporate the extra inputs.  Manufacturers do sometimes make modifications to models during production.

Can you take a look on the rear panel and see how the various connectors are labeled?

1) Will my (Y/Pr/Pb) inputs  will work now  with Sky+ or sky Digital Box?
2) I do have  HDMI ? Will that work too with Sky digital Box ?

The manual said " Input a High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) high-definition picture source to this HDMI terminal, so you can display high-definition pictures on this TV in digital form "

I am also put the link of manual so you can see it

please see the manual here

Thanks

O.K., that diagram shows that you have Y/Pr/Pb component inputs but not direct RGB inputs (they both bypass the NTSC/PAL color encoding, but are not the same thing).

If you can find a Sky box which has Y/Pr/Pb outputs, it will quite probably work, but we're back to the issue of whether the TV will synchronize to the 625-line signal.  I suspect that the answer is yes, but it can't be guaranteed and I could not get a confirmation from Panasonic's technical dept.      Feel free to try it though -- You won't hurt anything.

Again, the HDMI interface itself will be O.K., but there's the question of whether the TV will synchronize to the different video signal.  Again, there's no harm in trying.

You're probably right to be cautious.  With these big organizations it's often difficult to speak to somebody who really understands the technical issues.  That results in two typical responses:

1.  They say "Yes," because they've been told that "This set will work with all satellite receivers" and they don't realize that it might not be true for foreign equipment/standards.

2.  They always say "No," because the thing you're asking about isn't in their book, even though it might work just fine.

Good luck!

Sky+ or HD Sky will not work with HD NTSC TV ( HD American TV ).

You have two options :

1) Buy Video converter ( PAL<>NTSC)  using sky+ only with no HD option.

2) You can make it work with Smartbox 301 FTA with internal Digital Tuner PAL/NTSC Converter to get the free TV from Hotbird,Nilesta,Asta, ...

Smartbox 301 FTA  is for 80-50 Euros  see the link below..
