poorly ring finger
« on: January 14, 2007, 05:21:20 PM »
I have been wearing my wedding and engagement rings for over 3 months now and have on and off gotten red, peeling skin in that area of my finger where they're worn. Now, are the rings too tight or am I allergic? Never had the problem with the engagement ring by itself. I wear gloves around all chemicals (cleaning, washing etc...). The wedding ring is one size smaller (the engagement ring slid around on its own). I have gained a bit of weight since I was sized, but only about 10lbs. Not sure if that is a cause.

Anyone else have this problem? I feel silly going to the GP, but it really is gross on my ring finger. I have taken the day off wearing my rings, but I can't go out without wearing them!

Suggestions are welcome.

Sometimes that happens from getting water trapped between the ring and your skin. Not sure how to fix it, though!

Maybe you're allergic to being married.  Heheh  j/k  Maybe take it to the jeweler and have it resized.  It does sound like an allergy though, like eczema.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Sounds like a bit of dermatitis.  You can try Eumovate cream, but do not use it for extended periods as it contains steroids and can cause the skin to thin.  Do read the instructions.

I had something similar (back & fingers of both hands) and within a few days, the skin had pretty much returned to normal.

my sister in law had that problem. she discovered it was a nickel allergy. first she used clear nail polish on the inside for awhile but then decided to have it replated. It is quite common after several months of use.

Every once in a while, that will happen to me.  Usually around times of high stress.  I keep my rings off until it completely clears up.

Same problem here. It was quite bad while on holiday in the US for xmas but has mostly cleared up. I used a mild cortizone cream, but like Cait says, don't use it for more than a few days.

I try to not wear my rings when I have a rash but if I do, I apply the cream first.

I also almost always take my rings off at night to let my finger breathe and clean my rings with rubbing alcohol periodically.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

thanks for that! Now I know that I'm not abnormal, plus the ring does fit alright, just a bit snug, so at least it's not too tight (would cost a lot to resize b/c of design). What they say on that link makes sense, so I will try that. I take them off every night and wear gloves already, but maybe I should take them off for workouts too b/c I have a feeling that has something to do with it.

I don't know if my mom has that problem or not, but she takes her rings off whenever she works out, gets her hands wet, wears any kind of gloves, etc. Even if you wear gloves when washing dishes or cleaning, your hand can still get sweaty in the glove. I would do as everyone above has noted, and also try to make sure you take your rings off whenever you know water will be involved until your hands are totally died (even if you just dry completely with a paper towel). Also, cleaning the rings is a good idea.
