Anyone know Stockwell??

Planning on going to London in the next couple of months and thought I'd pop down to Stockwell as I'd heard there was a big Portuguese community there.  I'm a Portuguese/American and thought it would be nice to see what it's like.  Anyone been there??  Is it really rough? Is it more hype than reality??  I've heard they have nice bakeries and cafes.  Would like to pick up some Portuguese food.

Stockwell is not the most salubrious part of London, but it's okay.  I'm not a big fan of south London, but yes, there are lots of Portugese cafes and restaurants.  To be honest, I wouldn't recommend staying around there on your own late at night if you are not a confident traveller and don't know the area...I can see how it could be a bit intimidating, as parts are a bit rough.
