Short-Term Car Insurance?
« on: April 17, 2007, 06:39:20 PM »
Does anyone know if you can get short-term car insurance coverage?  When I say short-term, I mean just for one weekend.  My husband has been asked to drive someone else's car over the first May bank holiday weekend and the owner doesn't have insurance.  Thanks.

As far as I know, all you have to do is call up (probably get the car owner to call) the insurance company and ask for your husband to be put on the insurance for the dates you need. I think this can even be done as short notice as the day before - I've known people who have been insured for just one day on a parent's car. It may be a bit pricey as it will be charged by the day, but I don't think it's particulalry difficult to do.

Oops, sorry, I mis-read the last line of the post - I don't know if you can do it then, because it would probably involve taking out a whole new insurance policy and then having your husband added to it - which is the owner's responsibility since the car shouldn't be on the road without insurance anyway.

Another thought is that if your husband has insurance on a different car (i.e. your own), maybe he could add this other car to it for a couple of days. I don't know if this is possible though.

That's what I suspected, I've told my husband to rent a car instead (we don't own one).  That's what he planned to do until his co-worker offered the use of his uninsured car.  His co-worker just moved here from China and bought a car immediately, but doesn't have a driver's license yet, so he's never actually driven the car and that's why it's uninsured...a crazy situation all the way around  :P

Thanks, I'll definitely look into this.
