Does wife need to file UK taxes?
« on: March 19, 2007, 06:49:20 PM »
I have a question about my wife's situation:

She's a schoolteacher working for London.  She gets paid in pounds. UK taxes and National Insurance are taken from her paycheck.   Do we need to do anything?

I read on some government website that most UK residents do NOT need to file anything, as the taxes are automatically taken from their paycheck. The exceptions are self-employed people or those with excessively small or large incomes.  Is that right?

Pretty much that's right. Now my question is why the heck can't America do it like that?

You are correct that only approximately one-third of the UK population need to file annual tax returns compared with over 90% in the United States.

The UK PAYE system was created in 1944 to raise money for the War effort.  It has remained much more accurate than US withholding ever since.

In fact the number of people required to file in the UK (and the number of low income individuals required to pay tax) has increased dramatically over recent years as a consequence of Labour government policies.

Luckily, a US citizen has the option of influencing changes in US policies on filing tax returns by voting or lobbying her/his Congressperson.

That's fantastic news, thanks.

Does she need to file any sort of paperwork, like as self-assessment form, to prove she does not need to file taxes?  Thanks

Her employers will have (should have!) already submitted a form on her behalf, stating that she is on 'Pay As You Earn' tax.

if you need to file a self-assessment form, you will be sent a letter from the tax office informing you of this.

...and as a PAYE employe, she won't be!

i'm a PAYE employee... and the Inland Revenue still sent me a Self-Assessment form.  My accountant believes that sometime in the US to UK money transfer triggered it.

i paid the majority of my 2005-2006 taxes via PAYE and just a little "top up" at the end to compensate for this money being brought into the UK, untaxed.

Update: My wife received an SA form last year, filled it out and gave it to her employer.  She did not receive that form this year. So looks like we're good. Thanks eveyrone for your help!
