A leisure centre...that's one of those terms that doesn't make sense when you first hear it and then you start using it as though you've used the term for years.
Let's see, it can be anything relating to a non-professional sports activity. Um, I guess that's right. It's a public swimming pool, it's a bowling alley, a gym, a skating rink...just one of those catch-all terms...but for some reason, people here don't say "I'm going to the bowling alley" it's almost always called a 'leisure centre'.
I hope that explained it.
Darn...I should have just saved my random thoughts and looked it up in the dictionary to begin with: "public facility with sports activities". That says it better.
What pleases me to no end is that gyms here tend to be far less costing than in the US. I recall paying an outrageous annual fee in the US.
Here is a price list for my local gym and area sports facilities. Although it's just for my area, it does also link to other gyms throughout the UK and perhaps you can find a particular one for their own price list.

I couldn't find the individual prices on this web site, but I can get them from a price list at the center if you want to know more...I go a couple times a week. If memory serves, a gym workout is not more than a couple of pounds for the day. Aerobic classes are something like £5 per session. My leisure centre (actually we have two in this small town) has a lot of actiites and things to do!
