site for buying continental Europe train tickets?
« on: April 04, 2007, 07:09:59 PM »
I am planning a weekend getaway to Amsterdam-Brussels-Paris. How do I go about finding train tickets in continental Europe?

Is there something similar to "the trainline" site?

thanks!

You should be able to book international tickets from www.thetrainline.com site - the main page has a link to www.internationaltrainline.com.

You can either get a 5, 10, 22 days or a month ticket for a set fee (starting at £180 for adults for 5 days) - and you can travel within 30 countries in Europe; or you can book tickets between individual cities...

Amsterdam to Brussels (for next week - 9th April) is about £34 per person 2nd class, Brussels to Paris is £57 and Paris to Amsterdam is £73 - not sure if this is the cheapest you can get, though.

Hope this helps :).

Can I put in a recommendation for www.seat61.com - a site with details on getting trains to pretty much anywhere in the world from London (he doesn't sell tickets, but it's useful for planning as he gives timetables, prices, route advice, links to providers) :)

We travelled to Greece by train and ferry last year and managed to buy French and Italian tickets from their own online services (voyages-sncf.com and trenitalia.it). SNCF will post tickets to you and Trenitalia do e-tickets. SNCF site has a timetable query engine available in English. Cross-border tickets can be a challenge or lead to very poor fares - we ended up buying seperate tickets for Marseille to Nice and Nice to Genoa because there were actually discounted fares available for that.

(sorry for the essay!)

another site is www.raileurope.com - they list all the different passes from each country and has been quite helpful in the past with train travel planning.
