This is the first picture of hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin as they will appear in the West End production of The Lord Of The Rings.

Three - Frodo (James Loye, seated), Sam (Peter Howe, right) and Pippin (Owen Sharpe, second right) - are veterans of North American productions of the show.

When it opens at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in May they will be joined by a new Merry, Richard Henders, who recently appeared in Caroline Or Change at the National.

At £25million, The Lord Of The Rings will be by far the most expensive musical staged in the capital.

The theatre has been transformed to feature a £1million moving set and no expense has been spared on the costumes, with each item researched from Tolkien's books.
