Does anyone know anything about Norwich?
« on: March 31, 2007, 07:33:08 PM »
My husband and I will be moving to Norwich soon so that he can continue his studies. I've been quite content in Hove and have many misgivings about the move. Does anyone on here come from there, and could you please tell me about it? Thanks.

Suzanne,

I'm about 20 miles from Norwich and go into the city for supplies fairly regularly.   I'm not a big-town person, but as larger cities go I'd certainly rank Norwich as more pleasant than many others.

Within the central district there's still a traditional market place opposite city hall, the usual mix of big department stores and smaller shops, plus Castle Mall, an extensive multi-floor shopping mall.   All the usual Asda, B&Q, PC World, etc. can be found around the ring road a little further out.

The River Wensum runs though Norwich, so you can see boats trundling along sometimes.  There are even a few floating restaurants in the Riverside area near the train station.   The city has a fair amount of green spaces within and around.  You only have to drive a mile or so from the station, for example, to get to the middle of Mousehold Heath, a largely wooded area sitting on the side of the hill overlooking the city -- Bandstand, lots of ball games on the weekend, footpaths to explore, etc.

Traffic can get a little congested in some spots during rush-hour, but it's still nowhere near as bad as more densely populated parts of the country.    If you don't want to live in Norwich itself, there are plenty of villages within easy commuting distance.  Once you leave the city behind the roads around here are relatively uncrowded most of the time.

On the downside, the crime-rate is rising in the city, although it's still well below the national average.  There are a couple of areas best avoided when looking for somewhere to live -- The Hartsease and Mile Cross Estates are rather rough I gather.

My husband is from there and my MIL & FIL still live there (Norwich), but Steve hasn't lived there for more than ten years now.  We often have joked with each other calling the Norfolk countryside (and Lincolnshire as well) England's 'Kansas', as it is primarily rural with the flat farmland surrounding.  It is my impression that Norfolkers ;) have been stereotyped a bit as being backcountry hicks:

I have liked the parts of Norwich city centre that I have seen, and we have been on some nice (flat & level!) walks there.  Plus, the county has some pretty (if cold) beaches - we are talking the North Sea here.

England's "Kansas"? YIKES! That makes it sound incredibly boring. But I'm going to approach it with an open mind, and we'll probably at least check it out before moving there. My husband's health will have a lot to do with it. Many thanks for providing your impressions, Carolyn.

The University of East Anglia is there so you will get the drinking students, but you'll also get the benefits of what Unis bring to a city (more culture, restaurants, etc). And UEA is a very good Uni from what I understand - maybe some opportunity for you to do some writing and editing Suzanne!

Norfolk is flat, but it has it's own special quality. The broads are lovely and the northern coast villages (Wells next the Sea, etc) are very nice.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Don't go thinking that Norfolk is completely flat!    Fair enough, it's not like Sussex or Kent, but we do have a few hills.

The northern coastal strip around Cromer or Sheringham has quite a few gently rolling slopes, and even Norwich has some hills.  The road which twists its way up Mousehold Heath that I mentioned above rises quite steeply, for example, and at one point where there's a break in the trees you get quite a good view over the city.   There are several other roads even near the city center which will seem fairly steep if you walk them.

Castle Mall is built into/around the side of a small hill.  You can actually enter from ground level on the first floor, take the elevator up to the fourth floor, and come out on the other side -- still at ground level.    The first time I used the parking lot at that mall I actually lost track of where I was and took a half hour to find my car due to all the entrances and exits at different levels!

I'd say the part of the county which is the flattest is around the Fens, the western part bordering Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.  If you drive the A17 from Boston to Kings Lynn you go across some very flat, open farmland which in terms of the landscape is indeed quite like parts of the American midwest on a smaller scale.

It is my impression that Norfolkers ;) have been stereotyped a bit as being backcountry hicks

Even some locals make jokes about this.  I've heard this little ditty from a pure-Norfolk girl:

"I be from Norfolk, born and bred,
Strong in the arm and thick in the 'ead"
 :D

You'll hear jokes from other parts of the country about the supposed backwardness of Norfolk too, e.g. "Welcome to Norfolk, please set your watch back 20 years."

But that's one of the nice things about this part of England.  Outside of the larger cities (Norwich, Great Yarmouth etc.) the county is still mostly small villages/towns and rural farmland.   The population density is low (by English standards), things do run at a slower pace, the crime rate is below the national average, and the atmosphere is more relaxed.

Plus, the county has some pretty (if cold) beaches - we are talking the North Sea here.

Yep, there are definitely two sides to the coin.  I'm right on the coast (literally -- I can walk out my back door, over the sand dunes, and onto the beach).   It can be miserable in the depths of winter when the sea is rough, the wind's blowing, and so on.  But it's gorgeous on a warm summer day!

My husband's health will have a lot to do with it.

If it's important, the air tends to be less polluted here than in many parts of central England.  And even though it might not seem like it at times, the annual rainfall figure for East Anglia is actually one of the lowest in the country.

I've just thrown a few pictures I have to hand into my gallery.  Check the "Rural Norfolk" album:

I'll add some more when I get the chance.

Yes, that is exactly what I'm talking about! :)

We love going to visit, but I haven't spent a great lot of time in Norwich - just here & there.  The in-laws live in a small rural village outside the city, although they are now trying to downsize & move to a flat eventually in/nearer Norwich -- thinking ahead to when they might get more feeble & need closer access to urban services.

I have been to some lovely places there in Norfolk - like that beach that was in the backdrop scene for Shakespeare in Love, and another place I think it was called Eccles Next to the Sea(??).  My MIL grew up partly around there.

I've lived in Norwich for a little over two and a half years and I really like it for the most part (though I only have living in Nottingham and London to compare!).  I think like any city, though, it all depends on what you're looking for and what your interests are.

You'll have the benefit of listening to Norfolk Nights with Alan Partridge ;)

Thanks for writing, all. And Matti, you've made it sound especially appealing with the Alan Partridge reference. Not. :)
