Hello from Minnesota
« on: February 28, 2004, 03:36:49 AM »
Hello Everyone,

I'll take a deep breath and start! I'm a UK/UK national - UK born and US naturalised. I've lived in the States for almost 8 years and have decided to move back to the UK with my 2 children. My husband is USC and we will be divorcing this summer.

I have always wanted to move back to the UK but over the years I have become quite at home in the States and now feel quite American. Now with having 2 young children and my impending divorce I feel that I should be move back to the UK however after 8 years away it is a little scary! So much has changed since 1996 and I know that I will need to re-educate myself regarding many things about the UK.

I've never owned a house in the UK and my children were born in the US so everything is going to be new to me.

I'm trying to contact recruitment agencies now so that I can have something in place for when we move. I'll be moving back intially to the Bromley/Kent area and would like to stay in the South-east - Cambridge is nice.

Anyway I look forward to getting to know everyone here and wondered if any of the members have get togethers. Even though I'm moving my children to the UK I would still like them to appreciate being American and have contact with other Americans.

Thanks to everyone so far for their help and advice. :D

Hi and welcome to UKY Louise.  We do indeed have meetings and many that are child friendly.  I have not had the chance to go to one yet but you can check out photos in our photo gallery and in the meetings and events section.

How old are your children?  We also have a forum set up just for them too.

My husband has been here for 3 years last month and while he loves many things about the USA he is ready to go home.

Well that's all for now!  Hope to see more of you!

Thanks Vince, Jenny and Melissa for being so welcomming.

My children are 5 and almost 3 and have dual nationality. Still fairly young but i know that with the split and relocation I know that it will be a hard time for them. It will definitley help being able to be around other Americans and coming to the get togethers would be great. Do children as young as mine come to the get togethers?

I am a little nervous as I know I am about to embark on a huge transition in my life. I will be flying over next week for a quick trip just so I can get some things in place before the big move this summer.

Wish me luck and I'll keep you updated.
Louise

Hi Louise!  Welcome to UKY!

I'm sorry to hear about your divorce, but it sounds like you're very positive about your future.  I'm sure you'll be settled into life here very quickly and it'll all be 'old hat' to you.  :)

We'd be more than happy to have you and your kids to one of the many outings we have with this group.  We had kids of all ages at the BBQ last year....in fact, I think the youngest of us was about 4 months!  And there will be a little one coming along next weekend to dinner with us, I understand.  So they are most definitely welcome and there are lots of American/British kids running about behind the scenes here.  :)

Anyway, welcome and hope to get to know you better!!  Good luck with everything.

Hi Louise and welcome to UKY.  I too am sorry to hear of your divorce.  I'm sure it doesn't make moving any easier.  Do you have a friend or family that could come over and help with final packing and flying back to the UK?  Good luck!

Welcome!

As a former resident of the Minnesota (Twin Cities area), I can appreciate why you might want to go - the morning before I left for good, it was -34F!!!

Good luck with you move, and be sure to have some lefse for me before you go!!

I to am from Minnesota.  The southeastern part as well.  Not many know my town, or villiage as it's actually called.  Oh, well.  I'm new here to, and have been thinking about moving the the UK.  It's not that I don't like Minnesota, love it here, I would like a change of sorts.  Something like that I think.
