Quick & easy question - I hope!
« on: March 15, 2007, 04:06:04 PM »
Ive been in the Uk on a work permit for a few years.  I was working on a work permit for the entire year in 2006 in England and paying taxes here.

I did not earn the USA equivalent of $82,500.

I was married to a UK citizen in May of 2006.

I don't own any property or having large bank accounts that generate lots of interest.

My question
What form do I use?
Do I file as married filing seperate?
Do I file in my married name (will they realize its me by my SS#)

Sorry if any of those questions are extremely stupid!

moggy32,

You will need to get in touch with the Social Security Administration to register the name change, and will need to furnish proof (marriage license/licence)--otherwise the IRS and SSA promise there will be problems. Also, it sounds like married-filing-separately is the exact status you need.

It's not stupid--everything about two-nation taxes seems complicated!

Have you already changed your name on your Social Security card? If not, you can continue to keep your SS card and file taxes in your maiden name if you wish.
