Choosing your local GP
« on: April 19, 2007, 07:16:46 PM »
I have a question.  Can one choose the local surgery in which they would like their care to continue.  The reason I ask is because DH and I went to a local surgery when we lived just a miled down the road.  But because we moved apparently we are now not "in their area" and should register with the one in our area.  The reason we don't want to is because the one in our area is waaaayy overcrowded because the developement around has actually grown more than 10fold what they expected.  And they only have the one doctor's surgery.  It appears we have just crossed over the line to continue with the old surgery.  But we have liked going there and are satisfied.  Does one have the choice to continue where to see a doctor or must they go to the one in their area.  We got a letter today telling us that if we don't register with then new one our current doctor has the "right to not treat us at our address if our conditions so requires"  They have also said that our name will be removed from the list the at the current doctor's practice as soon as they have received notice of our registration with another doctor or 30 days from the date of the letter whichever occurs first. We aren't looking for the doctor to come to us. We never had. In fact, I didn't think they did that anymore.

We are only a mile down the road.  Does anyone know if  we have the right to stay with our current doctor?

No you don't sorry.  You have to register with a practice for your area.

We tried to register at the surgery right across the road from us and they refused as we were not in their area.  We didn't have a choice! That surgery was lovely too and ours is horrible... :(
