Round Trip: Return date too far in advance?
« on: April 26, 2007, 11:40:11 PM »
I'm going to have to buy my tickets soon, and I'll be leaving in Sept 07 only to return in June 08. STA Travel and a few other websites show anything basically after March 08 being too far out to reserve tickets. If I'm going to be on a student visa, should I wait until closer to my departure to buy my tickets or should I buy two one way tickets? I'm just concerned as the prices go up a lot closer to your departure date. Anyone else had this problem?

buy a one-way, especially since you're a student. (It won't be a problem immigration wise since you'll have a student visa.) I got my one-way from Houston to Manchester for last September at the lovely price of $330 on studentuniverse.com (great site, highly recommended!)
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

call or pop into STA or similar student travel agency and have a chat with the agents. they can offer you tips or find you what you are looking for.

i believe they can help you buy an open-ended ticket  as well. i think dh used to do that when he was a student.

I had trouble with this when I needed to book tickets to the states. Even though I wasn't able to book them until a couple of weeks before I travelled (had to wait for the visa and confirmation of accomodation), I still couldn't buy the return ticket so far in advance (outbound was mid-August, return was mid-June the next year).

What I ended up having to do was buy a return ticket, coming back in December and then a another return ticket (to the UK and back to the US), only using the outbound parts of each.

It was a little complicated because I booked the first flights in case I wished to fly home for Christmas, but when I didn't go home, I had to sort out the tickets for June. The cost didn't really matter that much, because the government (my LEA) paid both fares for me.

The one thing that you may find is that 2 return tickets can actually be cheaper than 2 one way tickets. I will be flying to Albuquerque, NM in January and looking at Jan 2007 prices, a one way ticket was £600, but a round trip was only £480!
