Hello from Mississippi (blech)
« on: March 04, 2004, 06:36:04 PM »
Hello everyone!

I am the American citizen wife of a British citizen.  Though he likes to claim that he is from London, I happen to know that he spent his early years in a small village near Doncaster.  I am a navy brat who has spent the last 7 years in Mississippi.

I lived in London for six months and my husband has lived in the states for five months now.

I am glad that I found this site as we are going to attempt to move back to the UK in about a year or so (Lord willing and the creek don't rise as my grandmother would say).   :P

It's great to see such a welcoming place.  I am desperate for information and advice and have spent the last couple of weeks combing the archives.  I look forward to getting to know you all!

Trisha

Hiya and Welcome to UKY :)  So what's taking you both back to the UK in a year's time?  Just another adventure / change of scenery?  Hope you're able to find helpful information here.  Welcome again :)

ROFL!  Love the name of the place!

Anyways....thanks for stopping in and saying hi.  The whole transatlantic moving thing has me yearning for the days when the military did it for us.  Certainly was cheaper that way.  :P

I too am in the south though I dare say that I would find Mississippi an even worse fate than my current situation.

Well I hope you are finding all you need and don't hesitate to ask if you don't!

Welcome!

So what's taking you both back to the UK in a year's time?  Just another adventure / change of scenery?

We are both pretty unhappy here.  It was orignally (Mississippi, that is) supposed to be a stepping stone to somewhere else in the US but we've decided that we would just prefer to move back to the UK.  I am going to have to go back to University (start over) but I don't mind!

I think that for my husband, the difference between a world-class city of 7 or so million and a town with two stop lights and less than 3,000 was a bit too much.  And it's not really doing anything for me, either.

Plus, it's in my blood!  I love to move around!

Yeah, definitely a change of pace.  You mean the two stoplights didn't keep you both entertained and intrigued enough to want to stay ???  ;)

Hope your return to England goes smoothly.  Do you have any idea yet what part of the country you'll be headed for?  Back to London or elsewhere? :)

My husband sings the praises of Manchester, where he went to Uni.  I think he's always wanted to move back there.

In spite of the fact that I once swore a solemn oath never to live any further north than Jackson, Mississippi (I am not a fan of the cold), Manchester seems fine to me in spite of this worrying rain I keep hearing about.  I think it would have the flavo(u)r of a big city without so much of the high cost.

this is fun!  I am so glad I posted here!

Hi Trisha and welcome to UKY!  :)

Having made the exact opposite transition as your husband (moved from a hole in the wall, 2-stop-light town to the seething London metropolis) I know what a culture shock it can all be!  I hope your move back is smooth for you both.  :)

What will you be studying at uni?  I keep thinking about going back myself but I'm having to wait for a bit until I can get around those killer "international" fees.   :-/

I can't offer an educated opinion of Manchester, as the most I've seen of it was driving through on the way to a baseball game there.  (not that you asked for an opinion anyway).  My knowledge of the place doesn't extend beyond a drive through McDonald's and a baseball diamond in the middle of nowhere.

i would like to study an undergraduate law program or at least international politics.  I, too, am v. concerned about the hefty fees, but I am going to start looking at amassing a large student loan debt.  It's more than worth it, if I can get the loans I need.  I figure I can work part-time or during the summers and put away that money for the remaining tuition since you don't pay it all up front.

No one in my family, or for that matter anywhere, thinks that this is a reasonable idea and I didn't at first, either.  but I don't want to spend the first years of marriage (i.e. before children) in a place I can't stand doing something that makes me unhappy.  So, bring on the debt!!
