"Borderline" diabetic
« on: May 03, 2007, 05:51:28 AM »
I went to the doctor today because I just haven't been feeling like myself. I've been sleepy all the time, always thirsty, gained weight even though my diet hasn't changed, gotten dizzy if I don't eat. Diabetes runs in my family. Turns out my blood sugar levels are off the walls. I'm going to be out of town for the next six weeks, so they're going to run tons of tests once I get back.

For now, I have to totally change my diet then see what happens. No more sweets, watch my carbs, etc. I have such a sweet tooth too. I guess I'm just kind of in shock. I've known several people who have diabetes, but I never dreamed that I could have it.

*hugs*  I'm going through something very similar at the moment, and it's scary as hell.

Hang in there, okay?   [smiley=hug.gif]

Good luck to you.

Diabetes is rampant in my family, too.  My father had it, and died at 56.  :(

I  understand how it feels to live with that hanging over your head.

The good news is that you understand what it's all about.  Take care of your diet and yourself and you'll be fine.

I am also type 2. Have been for a few years.
You maybe on the mark when you mention weight.
Loose 20-30lbs?? and you might be able to beat the rap.
Obviously I don't know your weight so I am guessing.
My diet was good today but then I went to Costco and hit all the sample tables and on the way out I stopped at their food court and got a slice of pizza and a "very berry". Bad boy.
I am also a lover of sweet things and there are many temptations all around.
I do hope you can beat it.
Both of my parents had D.
The TV is full of statements that run "being overweight can lead to heart disease and diabetes"
So what are we going to do?

Have them check your thyroid.  Some of those things can be indicators of hypothyroidism and not diabetes.  Just helps to cover all bases, you know?

Good luck and hugs!

I've heard of people who were borderline diabetic who were able to manage it and not get diabetes through diet and exercise. It sounds like you will be good about taking care of it if you do end up having diabetes.

I second what Sadb said about making sure you look into other conditions that may have the same symptoms too. There are so many things that sound so similar.

Yes, my mother was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 years ago (lots of family history of it on her side), and was put on medication for it. After losing weight through improving her diet (initially she was seeing a nutritionist) and exercise, she no longer has to take medication, and her doctors no longer consider her to be diabetic.

My two favourite foods are pasta and chocolate. (carbs and sugar) :-\\\\  I have a serious sweet tooth. I did ok today...ate one brownie and that's it on junk food. This is going to be such as huge change in diet for me. I need to loose 20-30lbs anyways

I'm going to be travelling for about two months, so exercise is going to be hard to fit in.

Is there anyway you can get insurance to pay to see a nutritionist? The one my mom saw specializes in diabetes, and has really educated her on how/what to eat. She has really had to change a lot of her habbits, and learn a lot about food. She also has to pay much more attention to making sure that she eats on a well-defined schedule, or else her blood sugars can drop and spike.

I understand about the sweet tooth. When I"m good about exercising it naturally fades for me though. I used to not like chocolate at all when I was good about working out. Even when travelling you can still do some things. Bring a jumprope, that's great for a quick cardio workout and it's so hard! Push ups and lunges are something you can do anywhere as well.

I'm glad to hear you went the Dr's.....I sadly ignored every symptom I had (just thought I was overdoing it...kids, job, house to run and Christmas).
I finally went to the Dr's because I lost my distance vision just after New Years eve in 2002 (sugars were soring)....it was still missed because it's not in my family. It was another 6 weeks before I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and it was a huge shock!!!
But, type 2 diabetes can be reversed as long as you can be strict with diet and exercises.....and having a sweet tooth is a bugger when it comes to diet control. Once you get all the tests done and you know exactly what is causing the tiredness you'll be able to focus more on what you need to do....Good Luck with all the tests and I hope you get the results you want.
Life is just peachy and will be even "peachier" in 08!!!
