Registering Our Marriage in the U.K.
« on: May 16, 2007, 01:06:22 PM »
I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this kind of question, but here goes:

My husband and I got married in NC in September 2006. My in-laws have since suggested that we register our marriage here in the U.K. That way, if one day down the line our children want to trace our family history, etc., we'll be registered here as well as the U.S. Does anyone know what we have to do to register the marriage here? My in-laws said they thought it might just involve taking an official copy of our marriage license to our local registry office, but I figured I'd check here first to see if anyone else has been through this process.

I Was not aware that this would be done, my understanding is that you can only register your marriage here if you were actually Married here. I may be wrong, Someone else will come along soon, and put me right, becasue if you can i would like to do this.

(I was married in NC too in 06)

Lismrsmullen is right. You can't register a marriage here if it's already been registered/legalised elsewhere. This is true for Scotland anyway, not 100% sure about the rest of the UK, but most likely it's the same.

Your children should be able to chase your family history regardless of what country you were married in.

Lots of families have changed countries throughout the generations.
