Shepherd's Bush/Holland Park area
« on: May 21, 2007, 05:36:23 PM »
Still researching places to live... :)  Anyone in Shepherd's Bush/Holland Park?

Come to think of it, does anyone know of a website/link that offers "reviews" of the different neighborhoods in and around London?  We definitely need someplace safe and good for kids, and would prefer an area with a little green, but it's often hard to the character of a neighborhood from a map or even aerial photo.

Not very familiar with West London, and can't think of a specific 'review' website but you might want to try just putting different neighborhoods into Wikipedia and reading the write-ups there.

I do know that Shepherd's Bush has some dodgy areas, and some very nice areas, so you would definitely want to be careful to make sure that you were happy with the specific area for the properties you look at. Not too familiar with Holland Park, but from what I've seen passing through, it is all very nice and very posh.

Reminds me of that Ab Fab where the Hello! reporter is interviewing Patsy in Edina's sitting room and asks "so where we are here, is this Shepherd's Bush?" and Edina comes running in screaming "No! Holland Park, Holland Park"

Just thought of a book you might want to check out...it's a Time Out publication called 'London for Londoners.' It's a great book which profiles all of the different boroughs and neighborhoods, and specifically discusses schools, parks, etc. It should definitely help you narrow your search.

Yes, BIG difference whether it's Shepherd's Bush or Holland Park... though both will be very popular and more expensive areas once the big mall opens at White City, let alone other property developments.
Holland Park is right at the edge of Kensington/Chelsea borough, and you can actually feel the difference coming out of Shepherd's Bush and crossing over to Holland Road.
One of my friends just bought a lovely flat on Holland Road (not a 'basement' flat, but a 'garden' flat ;) ), but you can hardly hear the road, and of course his garden/patio backs up to all the neighbors, which makes for a lovely view... and across the way, he can look into John Cleese's five story townhouse :).
Very leafy, green, residential, with a lot of cute little shops around, plus a mall type place right at Shepherd's Bush tube, and then there's THE MALL that's coming soon.  Property will definitely be worth a LOT more around that area soon.
The London for Londoners is a great book - also check out upmystreet.com, which gives lots of very detailed info, including a message board where people can comment.

I just bought this book:

The New London Property Guide: The Only Guide You Need to Buying and Selling,Renting and Letting Homes in London (Mitchell Beazley Reference) (Paperback)
by Carrie Segrave (Editor)

its the 05/06 version (the latest one). I had a friend who had the 01/02 version and recommended it.

The Bush is great if you like late night bars, pubs and Australians...oh, so many Australians!!!  ;D

But just down the road is Hammersmith, Brook Green (where Nigella lives), and across the Bridge is lovely leafy Barnes, where all is tranquil (and expensive!).

Notting Hill, dahling, is too trendy now...full of 'yummy mummy's' and Tory MP's.  And expensive.
