There are a lot of pharmacies around me that have an Rx pickup service.  I'm not exactly sure how it works, but I think you call the doctor to renew the script then the pharmacy picks it up and fills it and you just need to pick up the medicine from them.  It might be worth looking into for this.

I just tried this with Boots a couple of weeks ago and it was a complete disaster. I called Boots on a Wednesday morning and the earliest they could fit me in was Thursday. I went in Thursday afternoon to pick them up and they said that they had went to get the script from the surgery but the surgery didn't have one for me (which was a complete lie). I asked them why they couldn't call me and let me know there was a problem, all they could say was that they didn't have phone numbers for the users of the service.  I gave them my number when I called to set this up and I guess she couldn't be bother to write it down. I ended up running to my surgery at 5:05, picked up the script, ran back to Boots and gave it to them to fill before they closed at 5:30. They had no explanations for me when I did that. That's the first and last time I'll ever use that service but who knows, you might have better luck with your local Boots.

i do use boots mail order rx sometimes.  my choice of birth control is not common (the patch) and so every pharmacy has to special order it in.  therefore, i just send it in, with a form and two or three days later- viola rx at my doorstep.

(i'm sure other pharmacies like llyods, etc must have this service.  the only downside is that the RX needs to be signed for- so i have it delivered to work where theres always someone available to sign)

i had looked into the pickup rx service.  however, the GP is nearhome and all the local pharmacies close at 5pm.  Therefore, the only day that I MIGHT be able to pick up RX would be Saturday.  now if i could get the GP surgery to send my rx into boots.com online pharmacy that would be bliss.

Under our insurance in the  States, they would only let us get one month at a time.  Except if we were going on holidays or something, then we could get special permission. It was a huge pain but we did it because we had no choice and needed the meds.

i had the same in the US.  but the rx was written for let's say a year, with 12 refills.  i would then put the rx on file with the pharmacy and go in every month and pick up the rx (and pay the copay....)

what erks me here is having to order the refill, physically pick up the refill, send in/drop off the refill.

it appears that my home gp surgery now will allow pick up from the pharmacy local to my work.... i'm gonna try that once and see how it goes (although tanis's experience doesn't leave me with a warm & fuzzy fealing)

maybe consider another form of birth control? I got the mirena coil fitted - I have another 4yrs on it and it requires no maintenence and it perfect for travel, never worry about when to take a pill :)

There is one downside - it has led to some painful intimate moments when before it wasn't painful, I'm sure it's different for everyone. I still consider it worth while.

I agree though that the system of refills here is not ideal. I know Asda now has a pharmacy service, so maybe it will be better than boots.

this is vearing off... but last time i tried to get a coil fitted in the US they wouldn't do it b/c i had never had children.  are they more open to fitting coils in the UK?

i'm just winging- all in all- the Rx service here does have one HUGE advantage- it's free! (medical expemtion)

YEAH!!!! Success!!  i went to the dr today.  my usual doctor is on holiday, so i saw another one.  i asked about getting a 12 month rx for thyroid and bcpatch.  yep.  no problem.  i still have to do a repeat rx every month for thryoixine & in 6 months for bcpatch.

for whatever reason he was willing/able to do it.  and he took my blood for T4 test. no need for seperate blood taking appt.  very useful day.
