Corn dogs!!
« on: June 13, 2007, 11:29:57 AM »
I have had a ridiculous craving for months now for corn dogs.  I am good at craving things I can't find anywhere.  So I broke down yesterday and made my own!  I found a recipe that I liked and had a go at it with some hot dogs.  They were great!  It was greasy, of course, but oh it tasted so good for a change.  We had them smothered in French's Mustard that I found at Tesco and we split the last of our cans of rootbeer from ASDA.  It was our all-American dinner!  My British husband even enjoyed it.

It isn't something I would make all that often, but it was a fun treat.  There ended up being some batter left once we'd cooked all the hot dogs, so I chopped up some spring onions and cooked those in the corn batter--they were so yummy!  It was a fun experiment.  I think I'll make them for the 4th of July with my American friends.

I didn't know they had them there.  I don't have access to Costco here.  I keep storing up this list in my head of things to get when I finally make it to a Costco. Isn't there one in Bristol?  It is way out of the way, but maybe I'll trek out there sometime if I have another reason to go that direction.

If anyone's interested, the recipe was really easy.

1 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
2 Tbsp. sugar
2/3 c. cornmeal (called polenta here)
1 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. oil
3/4 c. milk
1 egg

mix the dry ingredients then add the rest and mix well.  Dry hot dogs and dip in batter.  Fry in hot fat or oil until brown.

I didn't have sticks to put them on, so it wasn't totally the same.  I wish I had done them with sticks, it would have been a little less messy, but it worked fine still.  I also added a little Tony Cacheres Cajun seasoning that I brought from home to the batter for a bit of kick.   It added a bit to the flavour.

Enjoy!

I used to make corn dogs in my old sandwich maker, the kind that seals around the edges, and you can 'bake' in. They were totally yummy, and a lot healthier than the greasy fried ones.....although, greasy is part of the whole corn dog experience! Lakeland has some bakeware, can't remember what it's for, looks a bit like a twinkie pan, it would be easy to do baked corn dogs in those. I'm tempted to buy one everytime I go there!

Makro is not the same as Costco.
Once upon-a-time, Makro was about as close as one could get. (imho: didn't rock my world anyways)
Costco isn't too bad, here in the U.K., but still lacks on a few things that they have in the U.S.

Oh good lord. I've gone many, many years without a corndog even crossing my mind (though I liked the Morningstar Farm ones too when I was in the US) and now... I want one.  >:(

We need to do a Costco run anyway - possibly tomorrow if we're not too hungover.  ;)
