Getting a vasectomy on the NHS

I did not find a low cost vasectomy, because I was not looking for one.  A friend's husband had one a few months ago up here.  He wanted one and didn't want to wait on the NHS list so he went and sorted it himself.  I just casually asked her how much that ran them, didn't go into further details for obvious reasons.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you had gone out and looked yourself as I knew you hadn't. Regardless, from what I know of surgical fees, I find that surprisingly low, as I said above. Local anaesthesia alone is generally 100 quid.  I wonder if there is a clinic or something up there specializing in them so they can charge less.

I agree though, that the NHS denying it (in some areas) is really short-sighted.

but, I have never heard of the NHS refusing to pay for BCP. 

But this is sterilisation.  And a procedure which costs many thousands to reverse and may or may not be successful.

400 pounds is a lot of money, but if you KNOW you don't want children and don't want to be on the pill for the rest of your fertile life, then maybe it's a good investment. I mean, how much does raising a child cost these days?

Someone may have already made this point, but would it not be more cost-effective for the NHS to offer vasectomies as surely that is the cheaper option than the lifetime cost of NHS service for an individual who would not have been born had their parent had a vasectomy?
