list of UK-approved prescription drugs?
« on: July 01, 2007, 10:39:48 PM »
Does anyone know if/where there is a master list of approved precription drugs in the UK? I ask because I believe I am taking a drug that has been withdrawn in Europe but is still prescribed, though with a "black-box warning," in the US. If it is not available in the UK I need to switch to a different drug before I move there in September. Thanks!

Hiya
You could try www.bnf.org
Its a site that is the online equivelant of the UK nursing/dr drug reference book that is in just about every GP practice and on every wards drug trolleys..
 Hope that helps

I didn't look that closely at their requirements, but that site does require registration... if for some reason you can't get registered, there are a couple people on here (including myself) who will have access to the printed versions of the BNF.

The BNF may have some outdated info though. It is not updated *that* often. I can also find out about discontinued drugs at my work, too. PM me if you need to (I work for a health insurance company and we deal with drug issues a lot - there are also a few nurses on here).

be cautious about "equivalents".

when i tried to get one of my TMJ drugs here, i was told it's not available in the uk & was given a scrip for what the gp thought was equivalent here. turned out to be as equivalent as horse tranquilisers are to aspirin!  ::)
