Thanks for all the great ideas!  Steve told me this morning that he'll just do all the cooking -- yaye!  (That way I can focus on cleaning house.)

We're taking everyone out for a pub lunch on Sunday.  He's going to pick some things up at our local deli for Saturday lunch -- things for sandwiches, olives, crisps, etc.  (He usually does the shopping on Saturday morning anyway.)  I'm passing all your fab ideas on to him, because he still has to sort something for Saturday evening.

Lola, I definitely like the pizza idea!!! :)

I'll probably pick up some assorted booze later today & let that be my contribution -- what else do you need?!!? ;)

How about homemade (or packet!) gnocchi, topped with three or four types of mushrooms cooked in butter with garlic and minced shallots and a grind or two of fresh nutmeg. Top with chopped fresh basil and a grating of parmesan cheese. If they don't do dairy, use olive oil and leave off the cheese. Serve with roasted mediterranean veg and a big bag salad tossed with kalamata olives and artichoke hearts. Because this would be a fairly light (but flavourful!) meal, you could have something indulgent for desert.

Here's a tofu one: mango-ginger tofu

Saute the following: 2 tsp peanut oil, 3 cloves garlic minced, 4 Tbs fresh ginger minced, 1 jalapeno chopped or left whole to be picked out later. Add 2 large mangos, chopped, 3 Tbs maple syrup and 8 oz white wine or vegetable stock, cover pot and simmer 30 minutes. Add 2 Tbs rice or cider vinegar juice of 2 limes, 8 oz orange juice and 1/4 tsp allspice. Let cool, then blend in blender. Marinate 2 lbs of extra firm tofu, sliced, in this mixture overnight. The next day, arrange the tofu in a baking dish, reserving half the marinade. Bake at 190C for 20 minutes, flip it over and add 1 mango sliced in long slices and 1 red pepper cut in long slices to the pan. Bake another 15 minutes. Heat remaining marinade and pour in jug for serving. Serve the tofu over jasmine rice (you can cook the jasmine rice in coconut milk for added flavour!!), with steamed vegetables such as asparagus or broccoli. Pass the jug around so people can add more sauce as desired.

I have loads of recipes. Want anymore?

Steve claims he's got inspiration from this thread, but as is his style - it's all a big secret surprise, even to me!  I'll let you know what we end up with! :)

He ended up with an interesting combination of things.  He bought stuff from the local deli for Saturday lunch - olives, hummous, really nice ciabattas, sundried tomatoes, Ilkley (local) ham, brie, Wensleydale, etc.

Saturday night, he got inspiration from Britwife's broad bean stew idea & kind of made up his own thing using broad beans.  He also did potatoes tossed in a spicy tomato sauce (think patatas bravas), and a fab salad!  The salad was fresh spinach, tossed with toasted pine nuts, and a dressing made with olive oil, a really nice white wine vinegar, grated parmesan & seasonings to taste.  It was all good but I thought the salad was especially nice.  Oh & he did two versions of the broad bean thing -- one with parma ham in it, and one without. :)
