Wedding Bands
« on: February 20, 2004, 08:51:20 PM »
Hiya.  We're starting our search for wedding bands, and are continuously drawn to some more modern looking white gold ones.  The thing is, they're somewhat wider, say 5mm and won't look right with my delicate and very simple engagement ring (which I love and really want to keep wearing everyday).

What sorts of bands did you all select?  Here's the sorts of styles we're looking at just now (if you're interested).  Not sure that we would get these ones or from this jeweller, just a general idea of the type we like.  http://www.oghamjewellery.com/whitegold_wedding_rings.htm

We're really torn as we would like matching bands I think, or at least ones that complimented each other, but I still am stuck on wanting to wear my engagement ring on the left hand.  My mom suggested wearing the ring on the right hand, but I'm not sure.  I know that most women continue wearing their engagment ring on their left hand after they are married in the States, and think it is the same situation in the UK.  Have any of you opted to wear your engagment ring on the right hand?  Is this a somewhat common practice? :-/

I know, I know, it's a petty concern, but just thought I'd see if anyone else had some input or the same dilemma. ;D

I actually have 2 engagement rings.  :o

I love my first one but hubby was getting increasingly disappointed the diamond wasn't big enough (not for me though!). Plus it had an unusual shape so finding a band to match it was near impossible and I wanted to wear the 2 together. So he bought me a more traditional one once I moved here.

We have similar wedding bands. His is a more traditional celtic knot design whereas mine is just generally twisty. I still wear my (2nd) engagement ring with the band. All are white gold because we both don't really like yellow gold at all (and platnium is just crazy priced!  [smiley=dizzy2.gif]).

I still need to get my 1st ring resized but that will go on my little finger on my left hand. It may not be proper but that's where I want it. ;)

Those are really pretty rings, btw!

Oh I know, platinum is outrageous!!!  We both wanted that originally, as neither of us cares for yellow gold at all, but we are quite happy with white gold just now.  The jewelry store where he bought my engagement ring is so fantastic and really helpful.  They showed my ring to him in platinum and then in white gold right next to each other and asked him to tell them which was which.  Turns out you usually can't tell platinum from white gold when just looking at them with the naked eye.  So we got the look we both wanted for a LOT less. ;D

I love my engagement ring, and we made it so that I would wear it every day for the rest of my life - we got it made without prongs etc, so it would be hard wearing. Love it. Loved it so much that i decided just to NOT get a wedding band, as I thought it distrated from the ring, and we just got one for David. :) Sure sometimes people think I'm just engaged rather than full-blown married, but eh... so what. :)
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

Just a note:  I can't wear white gold. Coincidentally, neither can my mother-in-law.  It reacts with our skin or natural oils or whatever and changes colour.  Ironically it turns to a more yellow gold. Which is fine!  Then it just looks like a gold ring...  but it negates the point of buying a white gold ring.  Apparently it's a pretty common thing.  (Not that it happens a majority of the time, just that it's not like 1 in 1,000,000,000.)

I'm not trying to encourage you to buy a more expensive ring!  I just don't want you to be disappointed like I was.  (It took a number of years for the change to happen, btw... it didn't just happen overnight!)

(BTW, I still love my ring!  It's just lovely and yellow!)

Another tiny tip:  both my husband and I got our bands in a “comfort fit” which means the inside is slightly rounded and it makes it SOOO comfortable; especially for my husband who didn’t wear rings and didn’t like wearing them.  He couldn’t be happier now.

You're sure right about crazy-priced platinum rings! I really wanted it because it is long-wearing (unless it's coated) but it was looking as if we couldn't afford it...until we found platinum bands at ARGOS of all places! So- we got them! Very inexpensive in the whole grand scheme of things (a little over £300 for the pair?).

I had a traumatic experience with wearing my engagement ring to work just after we were married ( a shelf fell on my hand and basically squashed the ring in half onto my finger!!)

:o
So- I tend not to wear it every day now- just for special occasions or when I know I won't be doing manual labor hehe Thank god for insurance!

Collington~  Good tip on the white gold.  Apparently mine has a protective plating on it that helps keep it white.  I will have to get it redone every 1-2 years to insure that it will stay white.  The same thing happened to my parents' wedding rings...were white then turned yellow, so I'll be sure to take mine into the jewellers' regularly. ;D

we were fortunate to purchase here in the states and got good prices.  his is brushed platnium so we have differing styles but i wanted more diamonds........go figure

i've got a pic of the set on here.....just to show ya.  i love them:

My engagement ring is on my left hand, on top of my wedding band.  My band was my husband's grandmother's ring and is wide and thick with a leaf-pattern engraved on it.  We picked his ring out at the jewellery shop that sized my rings - it's a mix of yellow and rose gold and is very plain.

I heard that the practice of wearing the engagement ring over the wedding band is so that the engagement helps "protect" the marriage.  Well, it's just what I've heard!  ;)
