Duty free booze through security
« on: July 21, 2007, 05:22:09 PM »
I was wondering if anyone recently had an experience with bringing duty free booze from the USA to the UK while connecting through another airport. Last time I flew from Chicago to Birmingham (while changing planes in Dublin) I went to the duty free to buy a few bottles of Johnny Walker but I was cautioned by the sales lady that if my next flight wasn't my final destination I could face the bottles being confiscated by airport security as they don't allow liquids through. I decided not to buy the JW as I didn't want to risk losing it while passing through security in Dublin. Has anyone else had an experience to share regarding this issue? I want to bring some bottles back next weekend but again I'm worried about having them confiscated!

I flew back to the UK from Central America via Dallas Fort Worth back in February. I bought duty free alcohol in the airport in Dallas and had no problems bringing it into the UK. However, passengers on the flight into Gatwick were told that if they were connecting in London and flying to continental Europe or another part of the world after landing in the UK, then their duty free alcohol/liquids would be confiscated at Gatwick.

As long as your journey ends in the UK, you should be fine with bringing liquids in.

On my flight to Chicago, they made it very clear that any passengers that had duty-free liquids should ensure they packed it in luggage they were going to check (if they had a connecting flight).

I would maybe call and ask the airline, because with the recent terrorist attempts the security level is probably higher than before.

Yes I'll call the airline thanks. I thought about packing it in my suitcase but last year I brought four bottles of wine back in my suitcase and they all shattered! God why didn't I buy white!! I remember it coming off the carousel and it reeked of wine.I was so embarrassed!

On another note, I don't know whether or not to start a new thread on this but is the rule still one single carry on to and from the UK no exceptions? Last time I had a small wheelie bag and a purse and they made me put my purse in the wheelie bag. Any news on this?

On the way back from the US last week, we were told that any passengers getting a connecting flight in the UK would only be be able to have one carry on.

I was told that you have to check it when you re-check your luggage once you land in the US. Can't take it through security.

The first thing I do when I have packed wine in my suitcase is sniff it when it comes off the belt. That smell is so heartbreaking! (Hasn't happened in years but boy do I remember it!)

As far as I know, the one bag rule is only for leaving the UK. I just came back from Milan and they allowed my purse and a carry-on.

The typical allowance is one "carry on" and one "personal item" which then allows women to carry their purse, which is usually relatively smallish, plus an actual carry on bag. It would suck if they considered a purse as a carry on!

The carry on + a purse seems to be everywhere but the UK. Every flight I have taken FROM the UK, they have considered a purse a carry on. It does suck, but you get better at packing light.

Gatwick in particular is still very much into packing your gels/liquids in a small ziplock bag too. They hand the bags out in the security lines.
