Electronics and questions there-abouts
« on: August 03, 2007, 03:07:12 AM »
OK

I know that computers don't need transformers if they've got a switch or a power pak that is ranged from 100 to 240V....

But can one use a transformer on a power stripe or a surge protector?

I have an external hard drive that I wanted to bring, but I'm worried it won't survive without a transformer...but I may have a couple other small things as well.
Am I going to have to buy a transformer for each electronic thing? (outside the computer, of course)

thanks

We have a power strip plugged into a transformer, which we use for chargers for small electronics. Nothing's fried in eight months...

But check on the back of your devices, or on the plug if they have one of those big clunky transformer-type plugs. That will tell you whether they're good for 240V or only 120V.

No.  Just get one step-down transformer which is large enough to run everything and connect your American power strip to it, then plug all the 120V-only equipment into the strip, as Elynor has done.  As well as being easier and much cheaper, it's also electrically more efficient to have one large transformer rather than multiple small ones.

Paul, where do you find this step-down transformer?  I will need to plug in an external hard drive.
I am the architect of my destiny.

Two places which offer good transformers:

http://www.newmarket-transformers.co.uk

Look for the units which come fully cased and with an American socket so you can just plug in your U.S. power strip.
