What exactly do you mean by you wanting to extend your trip on British Airways? Did you want to change your return date to stay longer in the UK? I dont see any reason why they wouldnt let you; normally you just pay a penalty fee for changing the date of your trip. Are you trying to stay past the legal 90 day tourism limit (if you just hold a US passport?)

As a side note, what does "ur" mean?

British Airways (and most other airlines) offer a range of fares, with the lowest price ones committing you to a particular flight at the time of booking.  People who might want to change pay a little more for a ticket that can be changed, but at a price.  If you really don't know when you'll return, you go for an "open ticket" which costs even more but you can decide to change it at any time at no penalty.

The airlines have historically had a big problem with "no shows" and have a policy of overbooking flights to try to make up for this and it's a big headache for them.   Which is why they encourage people to make and keep plans by offering really good fares if you can do so.

I'm guessing that ladymoonwalker27 had one of these really good fare tickets - please do let me know if that's not the case so that I can amend my comments  :)

I've changed my tickets on BA before with it having been the cheapest supposedly 'no changes allowed' ticket.  I had to go to the BA office in person in Birmingham the day before the flight was due to depart to exchange it and pay the difference.  I'll be doing the same this time.  If you want to stay longer than your scheduled return, at least call the airline and let them know you're giving your seat up.  If you really aren't able to salvage your ticket, you'll have to purchase another to fly home.

Just an idea.. but would it be possible to purchase a return ticket so that you already have your next arrival to the UK sorted??  Although.. immigration may have a hard time with that if you're telling them you intend to stay for 6 months and can't produce a ticket for a flight home...

Yes, I agree with Terinth. I think I strongly need to urge you to not leave it open-ended if you're planning such a long visit. There's one thing about having to pay a bit more...and another at being turned away to go back where you came from immediately after you just arrived.
