Also, you can take Flyglobespan from a few US cities, and that might actually work better.

DO NOT FLY with Flyglobespan out of the US! My in-laws were using them for awhile as they have a place in Florida. Between the two of them, they were flying monthly between Florida and Glasgow. Everytime there were problems, usually they would get stuck in Florida for days at a time. They have stopped flying with them and have got back to Continental and KLM. I would not recommend Flyglobespan if you were on any kind of schedule to be somewhere. We usually fly with KLM - they have flights from SF and LA to Edinburgh. The only bummer is the flight leaving Edinburgh is super early but we like getting back to SF at 1pm in the afternoon. We've been flying them for a couple of years now without any hassles. My worst experience has been with American Airlines Glasgow-ORD-SF. Everything went wrong, we were delayed both outbound & inbound (by two days getting back to Scotland) lost luggage, no one from the airline would help us. Also, I think getting around the Highlands is easiest with a car but there are tons of bus travel agencies that aim toward all different age groups and lengths of the tour. Good luck!
