Rhia - as a keen cook I'm interested in this. Is the American definition of a casserole different? Because I would think of a casserole as a dish where the meat and veg are braised in a little fat and then slow cooked in stock or soup or whatever. If I make the sort of dish you describe (which I do frequently to use up leftovers) I'm not sure what I call it. This isn't a criticism at all, I'm just curious.

We've had this discussion at my house before. American casseroles are more hearty, kinda like a meatloaf in that it all sticks together (except for green bean 'casserole', at least mine!lol). The Brit version of casserole is more akin to an American stew/soup.

Both are great, tho!

No worries hon,as I didnt think you was being critical. Its how the recipie was sent to me in my e-mail.To be honest,I really dont know how they come up with all the different ways to define things.

You will find that in the US, in different regions that we have different names for the same recipes. Now thats confusing! LOL

Right - now I want to try it. What would be a really good combination - any suggestions? Also, how many does it serve - approximately, and what do I do when I've mixed it all together. Do you bake it in the oven?

To me, a casserole is something that is a combination of things and baked in a large dish. On the dinner table, it gets scooped out, usually with a big spoon. It is usually served as an accompaniment to a meat (like a potato, or green bean casserole) but it can sometimes be the main meal.

The confusion in our kitchen comes when my husband asks if there's anything he can help with and I (thinking outloud) say that I am making a green bean casserole. He will then look at me with an odd face and then turn and walk out, "Okay". I wasn't quite finished with my sentence and his reaction doubly confuses me because I thought he liked green beans. Turns out he considers casseroles being THE dish and only dish of the meal and, knowing that I'm odd anyway, figures I was just serving green beans for dinner...and saying I didn't need any help doing that.

My mother used to serve up an all purpose dish known in the family as 'rice and bits'!
