how much to budget for three cats?
« on: November 18, 2007, 11:44:49 PM »
Hi everyone!

I'm not planning on moving to the UK for a couple years at least but I'm trying to set up a budget for how much it will cost to move my family (me, my hubby, my three cats and my tankerload of stuff) so we can start saving up. I know (I think?) that it varies by airline company...but about how much does it cost to move your pets overseas through the PETS scheme? I don't need to worry too much about the vet fees and things that I will have to get for my cats, as I'm actually a veterinary student and can get most of that stuff for cheap through the college of vet med hospital. My main concern is how much the airline companies will charge (my fav company being Virgin). Thanks for any info ya'll can provide!

The best thing to do is call Virgin to find out how much each cat is going to cost as they usually go on size and weight as well as how much cargo they're already carrying to the cost of transporting the pet.   :-\\\\  Plus, you've got the customs / Pets Scheme fees to pay.

The huge cost of moving one cat over a year ago put me off, as well as our limited space for him so we left him with my mom in the states so he's got plenty of room as he's an indoor cat.  For my cat, who weighed about a stone with flight & customs / Pets Scheme fees I was looking at about $1,000.  So roughly, you'll be looking at about $3,000 to move just the cats, but then again those fees are bound to go up in the next couple of years due to fuel prices and normal administrative increases.   :-\\\\  I'd budget about $4,500 at least for the 3 cats if you're planning to move in 2 years time.

Good luck!

Thanks! I know the fees were going to be crazy expensive, which is why I'm starting to save now. I'll definitely give Virgin a call soon, I was just curious as to what the general range was that it cost people on this message board. I'll figure out a way to get them over, as I won't/can't leave them behind in the US.
