Wild Gourmets
« on: October 12, 2007, 11:47:07 AM »
Apologies if this has already been covererd, but is anyone else watching this show?  Is it me or is there nothing "wild" about what they eat????  I suppose the meat - ie rabbit, grouse, etc - is wild, but it's always accompanied by something that was traded or "found" in someone else's lovely walled garden!!!!!  ::) ::) ::)  And then, THEN, Tommy always seems to whip out an amazing array of herbs, spices and oils!

sorry, but when I watch this show I spend most of the time yelling at the TV like an old lady (according to my DH!) ;D

Did you see the first episode? I think in that one they did say that she was 'allowed' a stockpile of things like oil and spices. The fresh herbs she's got from gardens.

I'm not sure the point is to JUST eat 'wild' but to show how it's possible to eat a lot of things that you can go out and get yourself - be it through hunting or fishing or trading.

What annoys me is his desire to show us his bum all the time. Ummm, why?

Thomasina is the same lady who opened the new Mexican place (Wahaca) in London, BTW!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Yeah, but in the opening credits, they go on about how the country is full of fresh, wild things to eat!  In fact, this is what's on the website:

Proving that the British landscape can be as productive as any shop or market, Tommi and Guy travel across the UK on a mission to show that foraging for wild food is not just about eating grubs and stinging nettles

In one episode they were in someone's garden greenhouse and she was talking about how lovely all of the bananas and tropical fruit were.  I guess what annoys me about it, is that not only is it not wild, but it's not even native to this country and is only grown here in manufactured tropical conditions! And I don't mind the bartering and working someone else's plot in exchange for some of the harvest but, they just seem to ignore the fact that someone else has gone to great pains to GROW it and act like Oh, look at what we just found!!!!  :D  I just think it's all very silly!

and so WORD on the naked bum!!

I agree with you to a certain degree. Though they do work for anything they get from someone else. Personally, I think Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall does a better job of conveying this whole concept. And thankfully, without his bum on display! :P

Too right!  I couldn't agree more.

I find this gal's voice completely unbearable, to hte point where I can't watch it.

Her accent is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

I don't mind her so much, but I've just found out they didn't even know one another before teh show.  It would've been so much more interesting if they were dating... :-*

OMG!  I thought they were a married couple!

I pitied him, having to listen to that voice all the time.

Ugh. I cannot stand this show and how skewed the concept is.

Her: "Oh, hello Mr. Farmer...I've found this toadstool. May I trade it for a bag of shopping and a leg of lamb?"

Him: "I love the feeling of country air on my backside."

My only hope is that during one episode they'll accidentally stumble onto Hugh Fearnley-Wittingstall's land and he'll eat them both.
