American sports on tv in UK (MLB, NBA, NFL)
« on: November 08, 2007, 03:00:08 PM »
Hello,
Can someone fill me in as to what my chances are of watching a good deal of Baseball, Basketball, and American Football on tv if/when we move to England? Any kind of pricing, scheduling info would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

Internet can be your friend in this. I love baseball, so for the past two summers I've bought the MLB.tv regular package which shows every game live online and then in archives. I think it cost 89.99 for the season, and I considered it money well spent.

For football and NBA, I use channelsurfing.net and except for the suns games which are audio-only, I get a decent feed for any game I want to watch. I believe they do show NFL games on one of the sky channels here though but we don't have sky.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Its £10 per month and comes as part of a Setanta package so you get some other sport channels with it.

Other than NBA you can get very good coverage.

Channel 5 (Free to air terrestrial)

NFL - Monday night games are shown on terrestrial FTA Channel 5, as are the late Sunday games after the World Series. No live playoffs but Superbowl is live this year on BBC.
MLB - up to 2 live games a week (these won't start broadcasting til 1am) and the World Series live but no playoffs.
NHL - as for MLB really.
NBA - 1 live game a week

Satellite and cable

Sky Sports

NFL - The main source for games though is on pay channel Sky Sports - a game at 6pm UK and at 9pm, plus if you are watching via Sky Digital satellite there is an interactive option that gives an alternate game at those times. They also show the late Sunday night game and the Monday game....plus the NFL Network games on Thursday and Saturday, and all the Thanksgiving day games. They also show all the playoff games and the Superbowl.

After the Superbowl than the Sunday evening slot is taken by NBA with 1 or 2 games a week and playoff coverage.

Sky will cost from about £35 a month including all their other Sky channel subscriptions

NASN (North American Sports Network)

MLB - seems theres a game on every day! And the great thing here is they pick up a lot of the day games so I get to see my Chicago Cubs at a reasonable hour here! They show plenty of playoff games and the WS. Plus magazine shows like Baseball Tonight.

NHL - comprehensive coverage including Hockey Night in Canada on a Saturday giving a double header.

Also show NASCAR and plenty of College Football and College Basketball including March Madness.

Subscription - £9.99 a month, includes Setanta Sports channels

I had a lot of trouble with NASN. Mostly due to the broadcasts. I got home one day for a Braves game that was being broadcast live and found that the channel had just frozen. I rang up customer services and asked them what was going on. They said they'd checked the problem and it should have fixed it's within 3 hours.

Great! The game will be over in three hours. Luckily it didn't take that long and I missed only an hour of coverage.

I would have to agree Mort with regards to MLB.tv. I got it last year after I cancelled my NASN subscription. With the international package you get all the games, including spring training and the post season. And there's no blackout restrictions either. You can watch the game later on if you don't want to stay up and you can view the archived games from (I think) 2004 or 2005 onwards.

I'm going to get the $120 package this season as the feed quality is better and we can watch up to 6 games at once.

I've not had that problem with NASN, fortunatel I guess that I wasn't recording the game when it occurred.

My issue with MLB.com is if you want to watch the game delayed I don't you can actually access the game footage without first seeing the score - I might be wrong there but when I tried it once that was the case.

I took a 5 day free trail on the final day of last season as I wanted to watch the Phillies game, where a win for them and loss for the Mets would take them in the playoffs....I had NFL on Sky at the same time as well!
