Dairy Alternatives
« on: November 11, 2007, 10:20:09 AM »
My dad is having to stay off dairy products from now on because it seems to have been causing his eczema. He's finding it quite hard as he's used to eating yoghurt and cheese pretty much every day.  I just wondered if anyone who has tried any dairy free yoghurt or cheese type products can recommend any particular brand. Thanks.

Ick, I am having the same issue. I am going to do some dairy-free for a while to try to help my stomach.  I don't eat cheese every day but definitely have milk and yogurt.  I am interested in recommendations!

I've been lactose intolerant since having kids. Don't they sell anything like Lactaid tablets here? I think I checked it out a few years ago but didn't have any luck.

Can he try yogurt or cheese made from goat or sheep's milk? I think I read that those don't tend to have the same effect as cow milk. I know Sainsburys has both of those now.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

If you're considering Soy Alpro doesn't do bad puddings (can get 'em in the tinned fruid aisle), they have a bit of a funny taste, but once you eat a couple its an aquired taste.  Alpro's not bad for plain soy milk, but So Good Soya has a nicer creamier taste to it.

If you're looking for a good selection of Non-Dairy products you may want to try Goodness Direct.  I've never used them, but a friend of mine has and says they're pretty good.  The selection also looks pretty fair and probably better than most grocery stores.  They ship to all over the UK mainland...

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll pass them on. I think I'll order my dad some stuff from that site too.

I've been checking this out.  The ingredient in Lactaid is actually the enzyme 'lactase', that's what breaks down the milk sugars.  Try doing a search for that on google.  I think I saw that it was available in Holland & Barrats (?).  My problem is converting the dosage.  My tablets from the states say I'm getting 9000 units, but I haven't a clue how to convert that into whatever units are used here...
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

I eat the Alpro soya flavoured yogurts every morning for breakfast.  They are really good!  Found with all the healthy yogurts in the fridge section.
