I have Sky+. I can't recall a time in the past 3 years when I've watched anything 'as it was being shown.' Everything I watch is recorded and watched later. Should I be exempt?

Yes, I think you should be exempt as you are not watching the broadcast as it goes out.

Afraid not.   I shouldn't really have said "watching" myself earlier.  The key element is whether you are receiving a broadcast TV signal, either for viewing/listening at the time or recording for later use.

So basically, a licensed is required to:

* Receive broadcast TV via a rooftop antenna

* Receive broadcast signals via satellite

* Receive broadcast signals via a cable or master distribution system

* Receive broadcast signals via the internet, Wi-Fi, etc.

A license is not required to:

* Use a TV for watching pre-recorded tapes/DVDs (whether commercial releases or ones you recorded yourself from broadcast TV at an earlier date)

* View archived video clips over the internet (i.e. clips which are supplied "on demand," not a stream of a broadcast).

Yes Paul yer correct4,

I missed the first bit when Chary said 'I have Sky+' - that immediately means you have to have a television license.

I'm still in 'answering the OP query & watching previously recorded content from online providers on their laptop or PC' mode.

Sorry Chary - now stump up the dosh!

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I would have been very surprised if I'd been able to get away with not having a license!  :)

If you or someone you live with is registered blind, you qualify to receive a 50% concession on the cost of your TV Licence.

Or you can use the audio out of a freeview box live legally for freeeee. Scart pins 1, 3 and 4 ground i think.

That concession is fairly recent, only introduced a few years ago.  Prior to that there was a "generous" discount of £1 off the normal fee for the blind!   :P

Hmmm.....   I'm trying to remember if I've ever heard of a test case for using just the audio portion of the broadcast.     [smiley=book.gif]     Technically, you would still be receiving the video signal even if not actually using it for anything after demodulation and conversion.   I guess it depends upon the legal definition of "receiving" and whether the law counts the audio portion of the broadcast as being part of the television signal in and of itself.

Yes, left channel on #3, right channel on #1, ground on #4.
