Driving from Northampton to Norwich
« on: October 24, 2007, 10:15:45 PM »
Is it really 3-4 hours?  How bad a drive is it?

Thanks, Nan

The AA route planner shows the journey to be 2 hours 45 minutes.  There are no motorways from Northampton to Norwich, just what they call A roads which can be either 2 or 4 lanes.  Traffic in the UK is always heavy and there are loads of trucks on the roads and they drive no faster than 57 mph.  So when they are overtaking another vehicle it takes forever and traffic backs up pretty quickly.

That will be very accurate! I use the AA route planner whenever I need to go somewhere new!

OK, so since I'll be going beyond Norwich, it probably will be closer to 3 hours. Do you have the link for the AA planner?

A 4 lane A road?  I don't think I've ever seen such a thing.  I think there are even parts of the M25 that are only 3 lanes...

Some of our A roads are dual carriageways, but not for very long stretches. They're usually two lanes, but four isn't unheard of.

by 4 lanes I meant 2 lanes going each direction, so 2 + 2 = 4.  Guess I got the terminology wrong

How far beyond?   Once you get clear of the east side of Norwich, it becomes much less congested and easy going.

Speaking of congestion, there was just a 30 mile queue on the M25 yesterday from Surrey to Buckinghamshire.  Only a mere 25 miles today, lucky me!

Just one reason why I couldn't take living anywhere down there again.   Around here we consider it busy if four cars arrive at an intersection simultaneously!
